When global packaging manufacturer CANPACK decided to expand into the U.S. market, the company with its roots in Krakow, Poland, entrusted its growth plan to Blue Rock Construction.
Blue Rock was proud to deliver not only CANPACK’s first U.S.-based facility in Olyphant, Pa., but also its second state-of-the-art aluminum beverage can manufacturing plant in Muncie, Ind.
In Olyphant, Blue Rock constructed a 1.1 million-square-foot plant, the largest manufacturing project in the Greater Scranton Area since Proctor and Gamble in 1966
Originally, the Olyphant project was designed at 907,000 square feet, but the decision to add new storage space and install a fourth line expanded the building to 1.1 million square feet. The expansion was completed in September 2022.
Last month, Blue Rock received a certificate of occupancy for the 862,000-square-foot Muncie plant.
The two buildings feature:
- Production area with four manufacturing lines
- Warehouse storage and support areas
- Chemical storage
- Recycling area
- Pallet-storage area
In Olyphant, the facility also features an Experience Center. The high-tech, 3,000-square-foot Experience Center entertains prospects with special audio/visual presentations.
Blue Rock’s responsibilities for the eye-catching space included framing, flooring, drywall, all electrical work, painting, fire alarm, plumbing, and HVAC work.
A distinctive feature of the Experience Center included the installation of Kwik-Walls, which are sliding glass partitions with a sound transmission class rating (STC) of 58, meaning loud sources are barely heard.
Blue Rock also had the unique role of coordinating work with designers Momentum Worldwide in the United Kingdom, which provided conceptual designs with 3D renderings.
Both high-profile projects garnered visits from governors and other state, county, and community officials, including Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf.
CANPACK said it selected Muncie as its second U.S. plant location with plans to invest $380 million in Delaware County and to create 345 high-paying jobs. The Olyphant plant was anticipated to provide over 500 local jobs.
